This recording has been my favorite cd for four years encounting, i thought it was a shitty one the day the first time I heard it. But back then I was into pantera, so who knows what was going on in my mind. I listened to it the first time, disappointedly and without listening to each song in full. Well i listened to number one and five, because i had heard them on the radio. I had no idea that after about two months on the shelf, wallowing in the absence of attention, my sweet Aenima would come out of hiding, and has since remained in my brain, and I am guessing for the rest of my life. There is no music like TOOL. I am the worst music critic, I have a horrible sense of genre and have no idea what "kind" of music they play. I don't consider it metal, because i can understand what maynard says. Its not alternative, although it is an alternative to bland alternative radio type music that loses its novelty after a month. I dont know what it is. I dont know musical mu!
mbo jumbo, so i wont try to explain Aenima's effectiveness based on its rhythmic complexity mixed with its seismological doo-dads and downbeats and all that bullshit. but its good. real good, and if you have never heard them but on the radio with "sober" you have no idea what you're missing.
Tool can lead into a song for two minutes without causing boeredom at all, the right word would be anticipation. Similar to some Dandy warhols or bethoven, a good lead in to a song is hard to find with hits written for the radio and blasted for a month and then forgotten. Mind altering intros. And then when it all builds up into what the song is really about, the meat so to speak, it only gets better and better, until you find yourself closing your eyes to shut out reality, unless you are driving of course. and then it peaks, and you feel good, or angry or sad, or desperate, or like you cant handle it any more, but you keep listening because there is something there that you cant put your finger on, but you need undoubtably and urgently. And then its over. But ive listened to this cd more times than i want to know, and i want you to buy it, or burn it, or whatever. buy Aenima, dont buy undertow, or opiate unless you already are in love with TOOL, because they will s!
care you and they arent as good. Aenima will scare you, but you wont be able to stop listening, so get that one first. just get this record, i am telling you, no i am ordering you to get this record. and give it a few chances because it is different, and dont skip songs because one sounds like hitler or one is a crying baby with echoes, and electricity flows through the air on another track, but listen to it one time through, and maybe another two. And then, just thank me later. or thank tool. not me.you need the whole album not just select songs or you wont get the whole picture. and i think ill shut up now.
